This is a God Story.
I was walking down the street in uniform when a man who was walking in the same direction asked me a military question: “Where did you deploy?” As he could decipher the combat patch on my uniform, but he no longer had a military haircut, I deduced he was a Veteran.
We quickly shared our combat stats as we continued walking:
“Two tours in Iraq with so-and-so unit in so-and-so year. You?”
We stopped as he shared his side, mentioned MEDEVAC’ing and losing his hearing in one ear due to a blast. “The nerves of my ear died,” he said.
“Can I pray for you to get your hearing back?” I asked. He was pleasantly surprised: “Sure. Nobody’s ever offered to pray for me, before.”
We stepped towards the side of a building for a little more privacy.
As I began to pray quietly into his deaf ear, he told me he could feel chills on that side of his head and tingling in the nerves inside. After the second prayer, he said he could hear my voice when I was praying; but when I stopped praying, he was no longer able to hear it. “It reminds me of one time when I was in a really dark season due to PTSD,” he said. “One day, I heard my grandfather’s voice speak into me deaf ear and say, ‘You’re going to be okay’. I loved my grandfather very much but he died a long time ago. Hearing his voice helped me get out of that pit.”
I told him since that experience helped him heal, it was a gift from God. I said that he should ask for more such gifts because God wants to heal him fully, even if my prayers didn’t immediately work.
“In the Bible, Jesus did miraculous healings; they were instant and against the laws of nature. But some people have a spiritual gift of healing that works with nature. That’s what I believe happened for you today. Let’s see what God does for your hearing over a little time. Please keep in touch to let me know.”
He was amazed at the encounter, and hugged me with tears in his eyes. He felt the love of God and of his fellow man that day, and that is the most healing experience a person can have.
