I recently celebrated my 40th birthday. In Army years, 40 is—like—near death! 🤣 That means I recently decided to stop running because my hyper-mobile joints just can’t handle all the impact. (Honestly, they’ve never been able to handle it—I’ve been in chiropractic care for almost the entire time I’ve been in the Army—but I thought it meant I was weak. It doesn’t.)
Instead, I’ve decided to do the exercises that my body most enjoys doing. One of them is ruck marching! I discovered ruck marching as a hobby when I was preparing for a selection course in my 20’s. Before that, it just felt grueling, especially during the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge course. (Holy moly!) Fortunately, I got better at ruck marching with practice and now enjoy it as a low-impact alternative to running.
As I’ve been healing my body from the effects of a difficult pregnancy, I’ve been focusing on enjoying myself as I exercise. I’ve also been focusing on figuring out how to exercise with my baby. So I stuck my baby in my ruck sack and we walked for 30 minutes. Next time, I will sit her on top of a 25 pound plate and a blankie.
