I discovered JJ Heller thanks to her lullaby “Hand to Hold”. That song is especially beautiful, but is not unique in that she has written so many beautiful, storyteller lullabies and songs for her kids or about parenting.
Below are some of my favorite songs of JJ’s that inspire me to practice and learn how to be a better mother than I ever thought was possible. As someone who did not have the model I wanted to have for a mother, her stories and songs give me a model I can see and feel, as if I was right there inside her songs. What a beautiful gift!
Here we go: below are Spotify embeds to my favorite songs written and recorded by JJ Heller (and husband) about parenting, along with my favorite verse or two from each song. I hope they bless you as they bless me!
May you never lose the wonder in your soul, may you always have a blanket for the cold, may the living light inside you be the compass as you go, may you always know you have my hand to hold.
You were never mine to keep, you were always just on loan, so have a little patience with me, ‘cuz I’m learning to let you go.
You are safe, you are loved, there is no need to fear. I will be right here.
Everything is sacred when you take time to notice, big love happens in the small moments.
Your heart will feel lighter, everything will be brighter. Find peace in knowing that all will be well in the morning.
I know it won’t always be like this. Eyes are open, I don’t wanna miss these ordinary days, these ordinary days. In a million little ways, you make me wanna stay in these ordinary days.
I believe in miracles, I hold one in my arms when I hold you. A little piece of Heaven, how is this reality? Somehow you’re even better than in my dreams.
I get to be the one to hold your hand, I get to be the one through birthdays and broken bones, I’ll be there to watch you grow. I get to be the one.
Sometimes it feels like forever when it’s dark outside. Baby, the sun will rise, however long the night.
And you carried my rocks in your pocket, flowers, and feathers, and butterfly wings. You had an answer for all of my questions, you showed me wonderful things. …I know this world would be better if everyone had a mother like you.
I’ll be right here, I’ll stay awake as long as you need me to slay all the dragons, and keep putting the monsters. I’m watching over you.
I thought you would steal my time, you stole my heart instead…And it feels like nothing else that I have ever felt, and I feel more like myself when I care for you.
It’s a big world, baby, big enough to dream. You’re not too small to do great things.
What about you? What’s your favorite parenting song?

I love JJ Heller’s songs, every last one of them makes me cry happy tears. Good grief, why do those songs have to hit home so hard! 😭🥹
Because we all need to cry beautiful tears from time to time!
She’s an anointed storyteller, that’s why!
