The Status
On Day 13 of our #40daysoffaith adventure moving from MD to CO on the word of God, we left Elvis Presley’s Graceland with a sad heart for all the pain and brokenness in his life, and reflected on how we want to be remembered in history.
Written in between the lines of upbeat-sounding snippets of his memorialized life was a story of poverty, talent, fame and fortune, and pain—so much pain! There was no mention of his drug addiction that ultimately led to his untimely death (he died at 42!) Instead, the museum focused on his green shag carpet, how he had TVs in every room, his luxury jet liner (pictured), and his expansive car collection. Despite all the money he received, he was born into poverty, and—in a way—he died in poverty.
The Takeaway
It made my husband and me reflect on how we would like to be remembered in history. Would we want to be known for how many jewels we wore around our neck, how many go-carts we had on our property, OR for how we changed the trajectory of humankind into wholeness?
Being remembered for the latter requires having a dream bigger than fame, bigger than fortune, bigger than medicating our brokenness, and bigger than a single lifetime. That’s because—as my husband says—if your success outgrows your dreams, it will ruin you. One way to prevent that is to never be successful (no, thanks!) The other way is to keep dreaming bigger, and dream to help others.

The Prayer
God, your ways are so good. Help us to be faithful and righteous in the small things so that we can be trusted in the big things. Help us to curate the impact we want to have on this planet, for your Kingdom. So be it—amen.
